A Farewell to the Beach They Loved
Kevin, Sarah, and little Ella lived just down the street from me, and I got to watch Ella grow up in that sweet way neighbors do. When they reached out about a session, it wasn't just about getting pretty pictures. They were moving across the country, and they wanted to capture this season of their life here, at the beach that had been theirs as a family.
We planned for golden hour. What we got was overcast, breezy, and a little chilly. Honestly? We were all slightly bummed at first. But that soft, creamy cloudy light ended up being something really special. Looking back, it matched their outfits and their energy so perfectly. Sometimes the weather just knows.
Every family carries its own energy, and the O'Tooles carried the calmest, most peaceful one I've ever been around. Quiet and warm and completely unhurried. It matched that overcast evening so perfectly it almost felt intentional, like the whole world slowed down a little just for them.
I told them to forget I was there. And they did exactly that.
They walked the jetty together the way they had since Ella was born. The three of them moving slowly, looking out at the waves, pointing at seagulls. Sarah had mentioned beforehand that Ella was in this season of pointing at everything beautiful she noticed, and I stayed close enough to catch that little finger extended toward the world. It was honestly one of the sweetest things I've ever photographed.
We made our way to the water and Kevin ran in with her, just like he's done since she was a baby. They played in the sand, they sat together, they just existed as a family in the place they loved most.
Then we wandered over to Ella's favorite playground nearby. I watched them go down the slide together, climb the steps, just be together in that slow and unhurried way. And then completely unplanned, Ella spotted the seagulls. And she ran. Kevin and Sarah ran after her without a second thought, all three of them chasing birds on the beach in the fading light while I captured every second of it.
It was the perfect ending to a session I'll never forget. This wasn't just a photo session. It was a goodbye to a place that had held so much of their story, and a reminder that the most beautiful moments are almost never the ones you plan.
Ella, Kevin, Sarah. I hope these photos bring you "home" whenever you need it. 🤍
